Your life now?

Feeling frantic in today’s world is oh, so easy. Finding peace can be a bit harder.

If you’re getting overwhelmed, wanting to shout “stop!” occasionally (or frequently!), or you’re just not loving life like you think you could, then this mindfulness course could be the perfect fit for you.

Life as it could be

How do we take a step back from the franticness without throwing in the towel completely?

Well, there’s been a huge amount of research on this, and it seems that mindfulness learned within a structured programme can be a game-changer.

And this game-changer, Finding Peace in a Frantic World, has the added benefit of requiring a shorter time commitment than other programmes, while still being the real deal.

How it works

Mindfulness has been shown to have a host of benefits. Hundreds of neuroscience research studies over decades have shown that these benefits include feeling less stressed, sleeping better, improving relationships, and generally increasing the capacity to feel joy.

We now know that mindfulness practices physically re-shape the brain. With regular and consistent practice, these benefits can be felt in a few short weeks.

And after 8 weeks of this programme, you will not only have changed your brain, you are extremely likely to have developed a depth of peace, calmness and spaciousness that allows for a whole new way of viewing busyness, and living life.

Here's what happens in this programme

We meet once a week for eight weeks. Before our first session, you read chapters 1-4 of Finding Peace in a Frantic World.  Participants always comment on what an easy, enjoyable and informative read this book is.

Our weekly meetings are 90-minutes’ long. This is when you’ll get to try out some formal mindfulness practices, discuss the topic for the week, and have your questions answered.

Between sessions, you read that week’s chapter of the same book, and use the accompanying CD to do the practices that go with that chapter. Daily practice take between 20 and 30 minutes. Positive change really is this easy.

What is it really like?

“I was about to retire and I very much wanted to examine my life and try to eliminate negative behaviours and old habits of thinking that kept me from truly appreciating what I had. A friend of mine told me about Jo’s Mindfulness courses and I thought, yes, this is just what I need to kick start a new beginning.

And it was. Attending a course focuses the mind – and body – and being given exercises to do in between sessions is very useful as it helps to establish the mindfulness practices so that they become second nature. Jo is a very calm and careful teacher. She is also very knowledgeable about the subject and its wider context and is always ready to answer questions.

I thoroughly enjoyed the course. I shared the experience with two other students and while it was a serious commitment for all of us, it was not solemn or inaccessible in any way. I would definitely recommend taking a Mindfulness course with Jo as the positive effects are for life and not just the weeks when you attend.”

What's great about this course?

Focus, gentleness and results

The course comes from the Oxford Mindfulness Centre and was developed by the respected mindfulness teacher, Professor Mark Williams. He’s a leading light in mindfulness and it’s his lovely warm voice that you’ll hear on the CD.

The time needed for this course is much less than on other mindfulness programmes. However, the training is still beneficial if you do the daily practice. Not doing it would be like taking out gym membership and not going; you’ll never get fitter or stronger (such a shame).

You’ll give yourself a head start by planning in advance when you’ll do this daily practice. Are you a morning lark, or a night owl? Where can you go that’s quiet enough for you to give this your full attention? Whose support do you need to have so you can not be disturbed for this short amount of time each day?

Going step by step through each of the eight weeks will mean your experience and understanding of mindfulness will grow steadily, and you’ll still have time to do everything you need to day-to-day. In fact, participants often say that they even feel they look forward to this ‘me’ time and feel that doing these practices gives them more time each day! The benefits of mindfulness really are likely to be noticeable pretty quickly.

Why I offer this course

Mindfulness comes in many forms

As well as training to deliver other mindfulness-based courses, I undertook a special training at the world-renowned Oxford Centre for Mindfulness in order to understand the requirements of delivering this particular programme.

It’s a Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) course, which combines the benefits of the original secular mindfulness programme (called Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction) with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. It’s useful for anyone managing the juggling act of a busy lifestyle, and it’s also recommended within the NHS for people who’ve helpful experienced depression.

In short, this course ticks all the boxes for busy people who want to feel less anxious, stressed and overwhelmed, and learn how to enjoy this fleeting life more fully.
