Each term follows a theme: this time it’s ‘starting where we are’.  This will help focus us on bringing together the fundamentals of yoga with whatever has attracted you to yoga in the first place.

What's attracting you to yoga?

People come to yoga for all kinds of reasons. Just a few of them are: wanting to enjoy a stretch, investing in health now to avoid problems later, recovering from injury or illness, wanting to feel less stressed. Whatever your reason for trying yoga, it’s important to get some basics in place so that you can enjoy what you’re doing.

These basics include practicing safely, finding out what aspects of yoga you most like (the postures, the breathing, the relaxation …), understanding the benefits and how they come about, and getting the highlights of the history of yoga so you can understand where it’s come from and where it might be going.

What to bring

There are so many styles of yoga classes available that it can all get a bit confusing as to which one to do.  They all have their basis in Hatha yoga, so this is a good place to start.

These Beginners’ Yoga classes will introduce you to the main aspects of Hatha yoga as taught in the West: postures, breath-work and meditation. These three practices help strengthen and stretch the body, calm the nervous system and focus the mind.

Actually, they can do a whole lot more, but that’s pretty good for starters, right?

If you’re preparing for your first class, you’re probably wondering what equipment you’ll need. Well, you won’t need anything. Mats, blocks and blankets are provided by me, so you can travel light. What could be easier?

In fact, there are quite a few things you WON’T need. For example, you can leave behind any competitiveness, self-criticism, judgement of yourself or others and even expectations.

Yoga is best practiced with a sense of openness, willingness to explore and a sense of fun, so please bring those along with you!
