Next term: 27 October-8 December 2014

Reigate, Surrey

Seven weeks: £70

Each term follows a theme: this time it’s ‘being here’.  This will help focus us on practicing being in the present moment rather than spending the majority of our mental time in the past or the future.

What's the class like?

This class approaches yoga with a mindful attitude, so that we slow things down and develop focus on what’s happening in the here and now.

We do yoga postures that seem less like the traditional view of what yoga looks like and tune in more to how it feels to move our body simply. We pay attention to all aspects of yoga movement, from starting each pose to ending it, rather than just an image of a ‘perfect’ posture. Each transitional movement becomes a mini-meditation in its own right, which can bring an incredible sense of calmness and focus.

We then practice one of the formal mindfulness meditations, which include sitting meditation and body scan. These are designed to help us ‘fall awake’ rather than fall asleep, but in following the simple instructions, we can become both relaxed and alert in the present moment.

The emphasis on doing what we can, rather than what we think or hope we should be able to do, makes this class accessible to everyone. It’s suitable for beginners, anyone wanting to increase their focus, clarity or creativity, and people wanting to introduce meditation into their everyday life.

Why mindful yoga and meditation?

Many people come to yoga to manage stress and feel more relaxed. This class approaches yoga with a completely mindful attitude. This makes the yoga postures less demanding and when movements are slowed down we get to explore the inner world of our body (which can be an amazing surprise if we’ve never experienced or even thought about it!).

Mindfulness meditation deepens the experience, as we get to encounter what’s going on in our mind in a very gentle and kind way. Rather than being swept away by memories or constantly anticipating the future (and judging them as good or bad), we practice spending time in this present moment. In doing so, we find a wealth of peace and satisfaction. All this comes from just moving, breathing and focusing on the here and now. It can seem almost magical.
